Editorial Standards

Editorial Standards

These are the rules we write by. We're publishing them because you shouldn't have to take our word for it — you should be able to check our work against our own stated standards.

Evidence first

We don't publish claims we can't back up. When we say a product category "has evidence" or a home upgrade "typically pays off," that statement traces back to a source — published research, government data, industry reporting, or the manufacturer's own substantiated materials. When the evidence is thin or mixed, we say so. When we're estimating, we label it an estimate. "Trust us" is not a citation.

Sources are linked

Our articles link to the sources we relied on, so you can read them yourself and decide whether we got it right. If an article makes a factual claim you can't trace, that's a miss on our part — tell us and we'll fix it.

Sponsored content is always labeled

Some of our content is paid — it exists because we have a commercial relationship with the company being featured. Every one of those pages carries a clear ADVERTORIAL label at the top, plus a plain-English disclosure. We never dress up sponsored content as independent journalism, and we never imply that a paid feature is a neutral review. The full picture of how we make money is in our Affiliate Disclosure.

No fake anything

Specifically:

  • No fake reviews or testimonials. Every quote from a real person is from a real person. We don't invent customers, reviewers, or experts.
  • No fake credentials. No stock-photo "doctors," no invented staff bios, no borrowed authority.
  • No fake scarcity. No countdown timers that reset, no "only 3 left" theatrics, no "12 people are viewing this" widgets. If an offer has a real deadline, we'll say so; otherwise there is no deadline.
  • No misleading imagery. No photoshopped before-and-afters, no visual bait-and-switch.

How we produce our content

Surf & Soul is a small independent publication, and our articles are produced with AI assistance and human editorial oversight. We think you deserve to know that plainly, not buried in fine print. The research standards, labeling rules, and honesty commitments on this page apply to every piece we publish regardless of how it was drafted — a human is accountable for every word that goes live, and the byline "Surf & Soul Editors" reflects exactly that: an editorial process, not a fictional person.

Corrections: email us, we fix it

We will get things wrong sometimes. When we do, here's the deal:

  1. Email us at hello@surfandsoul.co with the article and the issue.
  2. We check it — promptly, against the sources.
  3. We fix it. Meaningful factual errors get corrected in the article, with a correction note so the change isn't silent. Typos and small clarity fixes are made without ceremony.

No defensiveness, no vanishing paragraphs, no pretending it never happened.

Health and money content, held to a higher bar

Content touching your health or your wallet gets extra care: no disease-cure language, no discouraging you from seeing your doctor, no specific results promises, and clear reminders that our articles are education, not professional advice. The details live in our Terms of Use, but the spirit is simple: we'd rather understate than oversell.

If you think we've fallen short of any of this, we genuinely want to know: hello@surfandsoul.co.
